Monday 17th June Day 7

Auschwitz & Wieliczka Salt Mine - This morning we meet our guide as we set off to visit the World Heritage site of Auschwitz-Birkenau which is now a museum in honour of the victims of the Nazis. On this tour we will be guided through the two concentration camp areas with stories and explanations of what happened at this sorrowful place. This is a visit that is more than just historical fact. It is a way to show respect for the hundreds of thousands of innocent people who died there and to reflect a little on how these atrocities had a bearing on all our lives today. Most of us find it impossible to believe that man’s inhumanity to his fellow man can reach such terrible extremes but sometimes we need to remember tragic episodes such as this so that we can continue to be part of helping to make sure that it does not happen again. By honouring and remembering these unfortunate souls reinforces the value of the sacrifices our own men made when they tried (and in fact succeeded) to stop the spread of evil. This afternoon we make our way to Wieliczka Salt Mine. This is a working mine, 150m below the surface there are over 20 chambers to see. There is even an underground church with ornate art works, the music of Chopin, large lakes and a miner’s tavern. Tonight, your tour manager will organise a night out for those who would like to see how the locals enjoy themselves and of course to feast on more delicious polish favourites. (B, L)

Sunday 30th June - Day 20

Basel – Schaffhausen - Enjoy your breakfast this morning and when you have finished we meet our guide who takes us on a walking tour of Basle’s picturesque old town. The city is one of the best-preserved old towns in Europe, with half-timbered buildings from the 15th century to contemporary architecture. This afternoon we visit the Rhine Falls, a waterfall located on the High Rhine. The sheer power of the waterfall is awe inspiring, for centuries engineers have looked to harness the energy but the Swiss government have never allowed this, but in recent times it is being looked at again. If you are feeling more energetic you can walk around the fall’s basin, the walk is 4 km’s. Then it will be time to make our way back to our ship as dinner is being prepared. This evening you can dance the night away as we set sail to Breisach. Enjoy! (B,L,D)
